Earthing - How Going Barefoot Can Improve Your Health
by RaDonna Fox
Earthing is basically going barefoot, and there are few things more rewarding or healthful than communion with our Earth. Earthing is also commonly known as grounding, but there is much more to “earthing” than meets the eye. Diseases such as asthma, arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions like heart disease and diabetes are all conditions that are improved when we come into contact with the earth.
With each of these conditions there is the presence of what are known as free radicals. Free radicals are positively charged elements that wreak havoc on the human body causing inflammation and DNA damage, as well as nerve cell injury, one of the main causes of disease.
According to Stanford University's HOPES, “Free radicals can cause damage to parts of cells such as proteins, DNA, and cell membranes by stealing their electrons through a process called oxidation.” Oxidative damage is caused by free radicals, but more importantly it is the stealing of electrons that makes earthing so beneficial for disease and health in general.
The surface of the earth is covered in negatively charged electrons. They are called free electrons and our bodies are able to absorb these free electrons. When we practice earthing our bodies develop stable biological rhythms, we reduce pain and inflammation, normalize cortisol, all of which improve health and the human condition. Connection with the negatively charged free electrons is a very powerful source of antioxidants, powerful enough to neutralize the free radicals that cause oxidative stress.
Clint Ober “discovered” earthing. The owner of a major television station, he was an early pioneer in the cable boom. While doing cable installation Ober made an enlightening discovery. When installing cable, technicians use a cable that is made of a copper conductor that is surrounded by mesh. This mesh acts as a shield and is grounded or connected to the earth. The Earth then prevents a build up of electrical charges by equalizing the electrons in the cable. This provides a great picture, but left Ober wondering how human beings are affected by wearing insulating shoes.
We have become disconnected from earth, we need the healing vibrations of the earth beneath our feet. With the exception of pure leather, shoes prevent our bodies from picking up free electrons. We must go barefoot. The best place to pick up these free electrons is the beach on wet sand, but all natural surfaces such as that of grass, dirt, and gravel all carry negatively charged electrons. Substances such as wood, plastic, and pavement inhibit the electrical charge and will not work for earthing.
Allow yourself to sit quietly with the earth on your feet and allow your body to become energized by the earth's electrons that were to meant to heal and neutralize the free radicals in our bodies. Earthing and meditation are both highly beneficial to our health and can easily be done together.
So, if you want to improve your heath, get closer to nature, toss those shoes and step out barefoot!
