Gardening, a great way to create hope, joy, and happiness

We are always rushing, rushing to get from here to there to pay for our car, our house, college for our children. In this technological age we seem to have lost what it means to learn about and be in synch with the quiet steady process of life. There are few things more rewarding than sowing a tiny seed, nurturing it, and then reaping a great harvest. Somewhere in all of the rushing, working, video games, and television we have lost sight of joy; lost sight of the things in this life that can make us happy. It is time to get back to our roots, and gardening is a great way to do just that.
There are few things more rewarding than being able to get out and get dirty working in the garden. Gardening, be it flower, vegetable, or herb creates a special connection with the earth, nature, and within ourselves. Perhaps it is the nurturing, the hope of what is to come, the rewards of seeing the results of our efforts. But there is far more to gardening than meets the eye.
Beyond the obvious rewards, such as growing nutritious vegetables, having beautiful flower beds, and cutting costs at the grocery store, gardening offers many physical and psychological benefits. Gardening helps people grow as well, and we are not talking just gardens. When we “unplug” from the current technological advances and garden, it creates a sense of peace, hope, and a sense of personal value. Each day a garden produces these therapeutic values as one sees their accomplishments in a new bud or blossom, the beginnings of a fruit or vegetable.
Gardening also reduces stress, eases depression, and allows time for personal meditation. The simple act of pulling weeds, while emptying ones mind, has tremendous meditative value. “Meditative weeding” or meditative gardening is good for lowering high blood pressure, reducing anxiety, and increasing serotonin, all of which improves mood. Gardening also lowers tension related pain such as headaches, as well as improving our immunity. Meditative gardening increases personal creativity, happiness, and creates peace of mind.
We as human beings are intrinsically connected to all things in nature; yet, we strive to disconnect though negative patterns of rushing, of getting caught up in things that are technologically based without taking the time to nourish our roots. This disconnect has created a sense of hollowness that we can't seem to fill - we are looking in the wrong places to find joy. Gardening is a great way to create hope, joy, and happiness.
